Philip turned off the TV and sat there thinking about the news report he had just heard. Since he had gotten home from the hospital a few days earlier, three of the men he served with in Strangerville had been killed. Two of them were his captors. Something was going on. Someone seemed to want to keep people quiet about what had happened. Someone was killing people to do it.
He looked up at Shelby when she came down the stairs. “Kids all asleep?”
She nodded as she sat down beside him. “I think it’s time to find a bigger place. Fiona can’t keep sharing that small room with the boys.”
Philip nodded. “There’s something I want to talk to you about. It is a little related to that.”
She looked close at him seeing that he seemed worried about something. “What’s wrong, love?”
“I think you and the kids should go stay with your father.”
“Why? What is going on?”
He told her about the people he had served with being killed. “They’ve already shot me once so we know I am a target. The boys could have been hurt. I do not want to take that risk with you or the kids again. Your father can protect you if they come for me again.”
Shelby shook her head. “I won’t go without you. I’ll send the kids, but I stay with you.”
“Baby, I don’t want them hurting you. Please go to your father.”
She took his hand in hers. “Being away from you and knowing you are in danger already hurts me. If something happened to you, it would kill me. I can’t live without you again, Philip. I can’t.”
He wrapped his arms around her and thought about what to do. He wanted to be with his wife and kids, but he also needed to protect his family. He couldn’t risk their lives just because he wanted to be with them.
He kissed Shelby’s cheek. “I need to use the restroom, love. I’ll be right back and we’ll finish talking about this.”
“There’s nothing to talk about. I am not going to leave you alone to deal with this.”
He didn’t say anything as he walked to the bathroom. Once he shut the door, he sent a text to her father. “I need your help. Come to the house.”
