Shelby could hear Campbell crying in the next room. She knew she had to get up to check on him. Nakusa was at school and her father had taken Kyle to the grocery store with him. He had told Shelby that the baby should sleep the entire time he was gone, but he hadn’t.
She forced herself to get out of bed and go next door to the nursery. She looked down into her son’s tear stained face and gave him a little smile.
“You sure are a cutie.”
She changed his diaper then picked him up.
“Are you hungry, sweetheart?”
She had been pumping his bottles for him and her father or sister would feed him. This time she wanted to be the one to feed her son.
She took him to her room and sat on the bed with him. She laid a pillow across her lap and laid him on the pillow. She unfastened her shirt as she watched him. She smiled as he latched on easily and started filling his tummy.
“I know I haven’t been a good mommy to you, my sweet little boy. I’m sorry. I am going to do better. I promise.”
She ran her finger lightly over his cheek as he ate.
“I’ve been missing your daddy an awful lot and it has made your mommy very sad.”
She felt the tears in her eyes again, but she refused to let herself get back to how she was. Her son needed her to be the one taking care of him.
“You daddy is a very brave man. He is somewhere right now fighting some bad people to make things in the world safer for you, and me, and everybody else. I am very proud of him. You will be too when you are older and understand more.”
She smiled as she watched him. His eyes were so alert as he watched her.
“I can’t wait for your daddy to come home and meet you. He is going to love you just as much as your mommy does. He was so excited when we found out you were coming to join our family. He is the one that picked out your name.”
She had finished feeding him and had refastened her shirt. She was just sitting on the bed holding him and talking to him when her father came into the room.
“Sweety, I went to check on Campbell, and he’s….”
Andy smiled when he saw Campbell on the bed.
“Do you want me to take him back to the nursery?”
Shelby shook her head. “No. I’ve been enjoying our conversation. I’ve been telling him all about his daddy.”
She smiled at her son then looked at her dad.
“I’ll take him back to the nursery when he falls asleep. Thanks for helping with him the past few days, Dad. I think I’m okay now.”
Andy kissed his daughter’s forehead.
“You had me worried, Princess. I’m glad you are feeling better. And I’m certain that the little man is happy to have his mama’s attention now too.”
