4:10 Be My Girl

02-27-19_2-52-00 AM

Andy looked across the fire to his cousin. Aiden was busy exploring his girlfriends mouth while his hands attempted to explore under her shirt.

He smiled when Cara handed him a soda and sat down with him. The two of them had recently started dating.

02-27-19_2-53-32 AM

He slid an arm around around her and couldn’t help the warm feelings when she leaned against him. Her face was turned toward the fire.

“What’s wrong?”

She shook her head and sighed. “Just missing my brother. He loved these camping trips.”

“I miss him, too. He was the best friend I ever had.”

Cara kissed Andy softly. “No more talk about him right now. We are here to have fun.”

02-27-19_2-54-37 AM

He put his arm around her and pulled her closer. “What kind of fun are you planning to have?”

She grinned and whispered in his ear which made him grin. He got up and followed her.

02-27-19_3-10-47 AM

Andy watched Cara swim in the small lake. The others had stayed behind at the camp so it was just the two of them.

He undressed and slid into the water. He swam over to her.

“It’s about time you joined me.”

“I was admiring the view.” He kissed her softly.

“It’s not the first time you have seen it. The view hasn’t changed.”

He kissed her then watched her swim away.

“Come on.”

He grinned and followed her through the waterfall.

“Are you coming or not?”

Andy looked at Cara and smiled. “Are your friends going to be okay with me hanging around?”

“They won’t mind. Now come on.”

He followed her and her friends. They had decided to go bowling for something to do.

“In case anybody asks, you are my date.”

02-25-19_7-17-05 PM

Andy looked at the others and noticed they were all paired up.

“You could have just asked you know.”

The group had fun together. They had accepted Andy into the group as if he had always been there. He had enjoyed spending time with Cara and getting to know her.

They were sitting outside Cara’s family’s apartment. He saw his mother walk past carrying a cupcake. Thankfully all she did was smile at him and kept walking. That could have been a little awkward.

02-26-19_8-44-17 AM

“Would you like to come over and hang out tomorrow? My parents just bought me a new video game. We could try it out.”

Andy smiled as he nodded his head. “I will have to check with my dad to see if he has plans. If not, I would love to come over.”

Cara leaned toward him and kissed his cheek. “I will see you tomorrow.”

4:8 I Miss You A Little

02-25-19_2-36-31 PM

Andy sat with Aiden in the cafeteria. It was weird not having Reuben with them.

“Look at them over there all happy and laughing like they aren’t the reason Reuben is dead.”

Andy looked up when someone stopped beside their table. He was surprised to see Reuben’s sister, Cara, standing there.

02-25-19_2-39-32 PM

“I just wanted to say thank you for being my brother’s friend. He wasn’t an easy guy to be friends with.”

Andy shook his head. “Your brother was a very cool guy once you got to know him.

Cara sat down with the two of them. “He liked you two. He talked about you a lot.”

02-25-19_2-40-30 PM

She looked down at her hands. “It wasn’t easy for Reuben to make friends. People learn who our parents are and assume we are just like them.”

Andy could understand that. “Some people think that my parents being gay means I am also.”

“Are you?”

He shook his head. “I am into girls.”

“I see. That is good to know.”

02-25-19_2-40-49 PM

She got up and looked at Andy. “I”ll see you around.”

Andy watched her walk back over to her friends. He knew those two. They were his cousins, Antonio and Bianca. His uncle Anthony’s kids.

“I think she likes you.”

Andy looked at Aiden and shook his head. “She was just being nice.”

4:7 Gone Too Soon

02-25-19_12-22-43 PM

Have you all heard the good news? That annoying pest, Reuben MacDougal, will no longer be annoying people at school…or anywhere else. Well, he may be annoying the worms, but let’s face it…nobody cares. Actually, there may be one person who does care…his boyfriend, Andy Maynard. If we’re all lucky, maybe he will follow his boyfriend. They could be buried beside each other. Wouldn’t that be sweet?

Andy heard the knock on his bedroom door. He had expected it to be his dad or Kyle. He wasn’t expecting to see his papa come through the door.

Patrick looked at his son before hugging him. “I am sorry about your friend.”

02-25-19_12-26-03 PM

He hadn’t told his parents yet, so he wasn’t sure how his papa knew.

“Tayler told me.” He sat down beside Andy on the bed. “She showed me the blog. Why didn’t you tell me what was going on?”

“There was nothing you could do to help. We went to Mrs. Hoyt and it only made things worse.”

Patrick didn’t like hearing that. He hated that he wasn’t able to help his son.

02-25-19_12-26-14 PM

“You know you can always talk to me about anything, right?”

Andy nodded. “Are you going to tell Dad?”

Patrick nodded. “He needs to know what is going on.”

He nodded. He hadn’t wanted to tell his dad and worry him.

“I do need to ask you something. Were you and…”

Andy shook his head. “We were just friends. I’m not into guys.”

Patrick was actually glad to hear that. He knew this would be harder for his son if the two had been romantically involved.

4:6 Concrete Angel

02-22-19_10-14-26 AM

Andy grabbed Reuben’s arm trying to pull him away from the others. He looked over at Aiden. “Help?”

The two of them finally managed to get him away from Piper and her gang.

“You really need to just start ignoring them.”

“Aiden’s right. You are just feeding that flock of trolls.”

Reuben nodded. “I know. It’s hard though. You have seen the things she posts on that blog of hers.”

Andy nodded. Hell, Piper’s blog had gotten him fired from his job. “Just try to ignore them. They are just looking for trouble and you are giving it to them.”

“I will try.” He looked at his two friends.”I’m glad you two are my friends. My only friends, but it still count.”

“Everybody else is just missing out on how cool you are.”

Reuben did feel better. “You two want to hit the arcade after school?”

4:5 Brave

Andy and Reuben left Mrs. Hoyt’s office. Reuben had talked Andy into getting to the school early so they could talk to the counselor before school started. She had told them that she would take care of the problem.

Unfortunately, things did not go the way they expected.

02-17-19_9-17-09 PM

Mrs. Hoyt decided to hold an assembly about bullying. Sitting in the auditorium with the entire school listening to everybody tell their stories was not what either of them would consider a good time.

“I don’t have a good feeling about this.”

Reuben shook his head. “She said she would talk to the coffee club. She never said she was going to do an assembly.”

4:4 Hold My Hand

Andy sat in the cafeteria with Reuben and Aiden. They had been talking about the people that had been bothering Reuben.

“It seems like that bitch posts something about me on that damn blog every day.

Andy knew exactly who he was talking about. He looked over at the table where Piper Morton sat with the rest of the gang from the coffee shop.

Reuben looked at the table and rolled his eyes. “They probably go to the bathroom together too.”

“From what I have seen, they do tend to go in groups. Maybe they are part bird or something and only shit in flocks.”

Reuben looked at Andy like he couldn’t believe that information had just flowed from his friend’s mouth. The next minute, he had burst out laughing and drew all eyes in the cafeteria to their table.

Andy didn’t think what he said had been that funny. Now that everybody’s attention was on the two of them, he was wishing he hadn’t said it.

“I can just imagine them all flying over a convertible and shitting.”

The imagery that conjured up made Andy laugh.

“I think they are more the type to fly over a group of people and drop shit bombs.”

02-14-19_12-37-17 PM

That made the three of them laugh. They laughed even harder when the coffee shop gang got up and left.

“Right now I don’t even care that there will be more shit on her blog about me later.”

02-14-19_12-52-03 PM

“About that…I think you should talk to Mrs. Hoyt about what they are doing. I will go with you if you want.”

“I will think about it.”

Andy didn’t want to push him. He would be there for his friend no matter what he decided.

4:3 God Help The Outcasts

02-12-19_10-50-18 PM

Raelyn listened to what her grandson was saying about the incident at the park with his friend and Rylie. She didn’t like that he was involved in this mess.

“Is Rylie okay?”

Andy nodded. “She’s fine. Seems to have already forgotten about it.”

02-12-19_10-50-55 PM

“Tell me more about this friend.”

“Reuben? He’s normally a pretty cool guy. I don’t know why he acted like he did with Rylie.”

“You didn’t take part in it with him, did you?”

Andy shook his head. “I told him to leave her alone.”

“Did he know that she is your sister?”

“Not when he did it. He found out when Mom got there to pick her up.” He looked at his grandmother. “Why would he act like that anyway?”

02-12-19_10-51-15 PM

Raelyn shook her head. “That is not an easy question to answer. There are many reasons a person is mean to others. Usually it is because someone is doing something similar to them.”

Andy tried to think about any times that he may have seen Reuben being mistreated. He did remember a few of the other kids saying things.

“Be there for your friend, but don’t participate in his bad behavior. I think you could be a positive influence on him.”

“I won’t let him pick on any more kids.”

Raelyn was glad to hear that. “You have always been a sweet boy. Don’t ever let anything change that.

“I’ll try, Grandma.”

4:2 Leader Of The Pack

02-10-19_9-02-07 AM

“Hey, Kid. Come here.”

Andy watched the girl walk over to them. He was curious about what Reuben wanted with her.

“You here by yourself?”

She shook her head.

“You here with your mommy or daddy?”

She shook her head.

“Leave her alone, Reuben.”

“Why? The girl is an easy target. Whoever she is with isn’t pay any attention to her or she wouldn’t be over here with us.”

Andy shook his head. “Picking on the little kids isn’t cool, dude.”

02-10-19_9-32-18 AM

He smiled when he saw his mother.

“Hi, Mom!” He gave her a hug.

“Thanks for watching Rylie. I hope she wasn’t too much trouble.”

Andy shook his head and smiled. “She’s never trouble. She’s a good kid.”

He leaned down and hugged his little sister. “I will see you later, Ry.”

02-10-19_9-36-08 AM

After they left, Reuben turned on Andy. “Why didn’t you tell me that was your sister?”

“It shouldn’t have mattered.”

“But it does. If I knew she was your little sister, I wouldn’t have bothered her.”

Andy shook his head. “So if she was some random kid, you would keep messing with her?”

“That’s messed up.”

4:1 Kid On A Corner

02-09-19_8-21-16 PM

High school wasn’t anything like what Andy had expected it to be. He saw Tayler and her friends. He knew he could hang out with them, but the point of him being there was to make friends that he wasn’t related to.

He looked around the classroom hoping to find a friendly face. All he saw was a lot of curious stares.

He moved to the only empty seat in the room which just happened to be front and center. He couldn’t even hide in the back of the room.

He was so focused on getting the things he needed out of his backpack, that he didn’t even realize the voice he heard was directed at him.

02-09-19_8-27-28 PM

“Earth to the new kid.”

Andy looked up at the boy sitting in the next desk. “I’m sorry. Were you talking to me?”

“I was trying to. I’m Reuben. Reuben MacDougal.”

“Nice to meet you. I’m Andy.”

“Just Andy? No last name?”

“Maynard. Andy Maynard.”

“Mr. Maynard, I realize that this is your first day here. I do not know how things were done wherever you came from, but here, were actually conduct class with the teacher talking and the student’s listening. If you and Mr. MacDougal would like to continue your conversation, I can arrange for it after school in detention.”

Great! First day of school, first class, and already in trouble. He could already imagine what the conversation was going to be like with his dad when he got home.

It was still only the first class. Surely the rest of the day would be better.

02-09-19_8-42-54 PM

Andy was sitting alone at lunch when Tayler sat down with him. “How are things going?”

Andy gave a little shrug. “It’s different. Not at all like you see on television.”

“Taylor laughed and shook her head. “Those shows aren’t real. If you are expecting everybody to randomly start singing and dancing you will be waiting awhile. This isn’t a Disney movie and I haven’t seen Zack Efron around here yet.”

Andy couldn’t help laughing.

02-09-19_8-46-33 PM

“What’s so funny?”

Andy looked at Reuben who had just sat down at the table. “Just my sister telling me something funny.”

“I will see you after school, Andy. I need to get to my Physics class. We have a test in there today. A test I am no way ready for.”

“You will do fine. You are one of the smartest people I know.”

Tayler smiled at her brother. “You are too sweet. I’ll meet you at the flag pole after school.”

The boys watched her walk away.

02-09-19_8-51-19 PM

“Tayler Mackell is your sister?”

Andy nodded his head. “She is the oldest of us.” He wasn’t going to mention that she was only a few months older and they shared no common DNA. He didn’t know Reuben well enough to go into all of the intricate details of his family.

“Are there others?”

He nodded. “The triplets, Cameron, Kenya, and Teresa, are 12. Rylie is six.”

“That’s a lot of brothers and sisters.”

Andy shrugged. “I guess. I just never thought of it that way before.” He had always enjoyed having his brother and sisters around.
