Owen sat on Andy’s bed reading him his new story. He had switched to writing children’s books and tested them on Andy.

Maeve had set him up with an illustrator but it didn’t last long. She refused to listen to his ideas for the characters and made them her own way. When Maeve saw the illustrations for “The Purple Pumpkin Prince,” she agreed to find a new illustrator.

He saw that Andy was asleep and smiled. He kissed his son’s forehead and tucked the blanket’s around him. “Sweet dreams, Little One. I love you.”

He turned on the night light before leaving the room. He headed for the kitchen to wash the day’s dishes. He had gotten into the habit of waiting until Andy was asleep to clean up. It gave him more time to focus on his son during the day.

He turned the radio on so he could have the noise while he cleaned. He kept the volume low so it wouldn’t wake Andy.

Once he was finished cleaning, he settled down at the computer to get some work done. He went through his email and saw one from the bank. He opened it and frowned.

“What happened to all my money?”

Owen’s bank account was empty. There had been a few thousand dollars in the bank. The balance said there was less than $10. He called the bank to find out what was going on.

When he hung up, he was angry. Someone had hacked into his account and took his money. The bank was investigating it, but that could take awhile. They wouldn’t replace it until the investigation was over. Until then, he had just enough money to make sure Andy had milk.

He was going to have to do the one thing he didn’t want to do…ask his parents for money.

Owen heard the knock on the door and went to answer it. He wasn’t surprised to see his father.

“Don’t you still have a key?”

“Yes, but I also respect your right to privacy.”

Zaiden looked around for Andy. “Where’s my grandson?”

“He is already in bed.”

“Good. We can talk.”

Owen followed his dad to the sofa.

“How is Grandpa?”

“Today was a good day for him. He was sitting by the pool when Anthony showed up.”

It was impossible for Owen to hide his surprise. “Uncle Anthony? The missing son?”

Zaiden nodded. “He was with your mother when I left.”

“I will take Andy over tomorrow. He has been asking to go see his grandma.”

“She misses you both. She will be happy to see you.” Zaiden looked at his son. He could still see the sadness in his eyes and that worried him. “How are you doing?”

“Someone hacked into my bank account and cleaned it out.”

“Do you think it was Patrick?”

Owen shook his head. He knew that Patrick wouldn’t do that.

“Do the two of you still have the joint account?”

Owen nodded. “We use it to get the things the kids need. We are both still the parents of all four of them.”

“Have you talked to him?”

Owen shook his head. He wasn’t ready to talk to him yet. “We visit the kids at Dakota’s on separate weekends.”

“Have you talked to Aliyah?”

“Yeah. I called her to get her side of the story.”

“It was just like Patrick said. She sent me a picture of their daughter. Tayler looks just like him.”

Zaiden knew that had to be hard for Owen. Seeing the child as the physical proof of his husband’s affair would be hard for anybody.

“That little girl did not ask to be brought into the world the way she was. She is a sister of your children. Do not let your anger at her parents keep her away from her siblings.”

“I told her that Tayler is welcome to visit the kids on Saturdays at their mother’s. She said she would think about it.”

He put his head in his hands. “What did I do that was so bad to make me deserve this crap?”

“You haven’t done anything. You were just dealt a bad hand. It will get better.”

Owen wanted to believe that, but at the moment it was hard.
