Rowana was already home when Zaiden got there. He looked at her and wasn’t sure if he wanted to smack her or throw up more. Maybe both.
“Where is Hope?”
“She went to a friend’s to work on a project for some class.”
“Good. We need to talk and some of the things I have to say, I do not want her to hear.
Zaiden refused to set beside her so he sat in a nearby chair.
“Why did you bring us here?”
Rowana frowned a bit at his question. “I told you before. It gave me a family while letting the three of you stay together.”
“So instead of taking us to Uncle Collin or Aunt Diana, you filed for guardianship of us.”
Rowana nodded. “Your aunts already had four kids living with them. Your uncle also had a house full of people.”
“But they are family. They would have made room for us.”
“Then why didn’t you go to them instead of the campground?”
“Because I was young, scared, and trying to protect my sisters. All things that you took advantage of.”
Rowana shook her head. “That’s not true.”
“Yes it is. You have used my sisters to keep me here. Every time I have talked about leaving, you have told me that I couldn’t take my sisters. I should have known that something was going on.”
Rowana started to say something, but he put his hand up stopping her. “I could have gone to my aunt or uncle and they would have gladly taken custody of us, except for one small problem. You did more than just ask for guardianship of us. You adopted us. You and the husband that none of us ever knew about.”
Rowana was surprised that he knew. “I had to make sure that nobody would separate you. That was the best way. It was what you wanted.”
Zaiden shook his head. “At no time was adoption ever mentioned. You do realize that legally you are my mother, right?”
