Ages: Zaiden = 5; Nicholas and Tyron = 4; Zander = 2
Izaiah was checking the mail when he heard a voice behind him. He turned and saw the woman standing by the elevator. He had no clue who she was.
“Can I help you with something?”
“Are you Izaiah Maynard?”
He was a bit worried. How did she know his name when he didn’t know his. “I may be. Why do you want to know?”
“I have a message from Tony.” She handed him a sealed envelope. It had his name and address written on it in Tony’s handwriting.
He looked up to see she was already gone. He opened the envelope and read the note inside.
Kimber Rodrigues-El Karman
He knew that if it was from Tony, then it was a good lead. Tony wouldn’t have sent it if it wasn’t.
He got into the elevator to head to see this Kimber person.
He saw the woman in the yard playing with a young child. He felt his heart start to race. Could this be…?
He shook his head. It couldn’t be Zaiden. Zaiden would be bigger than this boy. This kid looked like he was only a year or two old. Zaiden would be just turning five and getting ready to go to school soon, if he wasn’t already in preschool.
“Excuse me. I’m looking for someone named Kimber.”
The woman stood up and looked at him. “That would be me. Are you Izaiah?”
He was a bit taken aback by the fact that she knew his name. “I am. I was sent…”
“I know why you are here. As I told the man who came here before, I do not know where your son is. I’m sorry.”
“Why would he send me to you then?”
“From what I know, I was at the same youth center as the boy. Unfortunately I do not remember anybody named Zaiden there.”
“But the lady I talked to said he had been there.”
“Sometimes the names change. Especially if the child is very young. It is possible that he was there the same time as I was, but with a different name.”
He had never thought of that. That was going to make the search even harder.
“If you had a picture of him, I could possibly tell you if he was there when I was.”
Izaiah shook his head. “I don’t. He was adopted a few days after he was born.
“In a minute, Imani. Let me finish talking to this nice man first.” Kimber looked at Izaiah again. “I am sorry I couldn’t be of more help. I hope you find your son.”
“You have been a lot of help. I had never thought about a name change. You gave me another avenue to look down. Thank you.”
When he got home, he heard Callie and Zander in the office watching some cooking show and talking. He went in and didn’t have to say anything. Callie had seen the look of defeat on his face before.
Callie kissed Izaiah’s cheek. “I will fix dinner. You and Zander can spend some time together. He had been chatting up a storm today.”
Izaiah watched Callie leave the room. He knew she was still mad at him because he wouldn’t agree on a wedding date. He wanted his son to be at their wedding.
He looked down at his son who was standing in front of him.
Izaiah picked up Zander and couldn’t help smile. He adored Zander. How could anybody not?
“Daddy sad?” He felt the tiny hands on his cheeks.
“Daddy sad. But Daddy is always happy to see Zander.”
When Zander snuggled into him, he felt his heart melting. He loved his son.
